In Russia, an Armenian citizen was sentenced to 12 years for participating in the war on the side of Ukraine

A Russian court sentenced Armenian citizen Armen Balyan to 12 years in a maximum-security penal colony.

Investigators believe he arrived in Ukraine in November 2022 and joined the territorial defense forces. According to the Investigative Committee, he participated in hostilities until December 2023 in the occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kherson oblasts.

Balyan was detained in 2024 at Moscow's Domodedovo airport upon entering Russia. He had previously been placed on the wanted list and charged in absentia with mercenarism. In addition to his sentence, he was ordered to forfeit more than 2.3 million rubles earned during his service in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
