Droa! leader detained in Tbilisi: faces up to five years in prison

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported the detention of Droa! party leader and member of the Coalition for Change, Elena Khoshtaria. The agency notes that an investigation has been opened against her under Article 187 of the Criminal Code, which provides for punishment for damaging or destroying property. The maximum penalty under the article is up to five years in prison.

According to investigators, on September 14 in Tbilisi, the accused damaged banners at the election headquarters of Kakha Kaladze, a candidate for mayor of the capital from the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party. She shared a corresponding video on the Internet and expressed solidarity with Megi Diasamidze, who was also previously detained for damaging Kaladze's election poster.

Commenting on the detention of Elene Khoshtaria, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that she is a radical who poses as anti-Russian, but in reality receives millions of rubles from the Russian state treasury every month. As for the expected verdict, the head of government noted that the defendant will not necessarily be given the full term - "up to five years means that a sentence of 6 months of imprisonment may be imposed, or it may not be imposed at all." Kobakhidze emphasized that when it comes to damages over 150 lari, the Georgian prosecutor's office is obliged to initiate a criminal case.
