The decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin that same day regarding the change of leadership in Dagestan was published on the Kremlin website. Head of the republic, Sergei Melikov, has resigned, and Fyodor Shchukin has been appointed acting head.
If Georgia falls under Russian influence again, it will destroy the chances for democratic development not only of the country itself, but also of its neighbors. This was stated by the head of the Georgian branch of the NGO Transparency International Georgia Eka Gigauri in the US Senate.
In her speech, Gigauri emphasized that the introduction of the law on foreign agents and other anti-democratic measures in countries like Georgia contributes to the strengthening of Russian and anti-Western disinformation and the weakening of ties with the US and the EU.
“The introduction of the law on foreign agents in Georgia has caused resistance from society, but the authorities continue to promote it, which threatens democracy. The upcoming parliamentary elections on October 26 will be a referendum for citizens - a choice between a democratic future in Europe and becoming a Russian satellite,” Gigauri noted.
In her opinion, the unity of active citizens and the support of the international community are important for the success of the struggle for democracy.
