At least 1,000 Chechens fighting for Ukraine
At least 1,000 natives of Chechnya participate in combat operations on the side of Ukraine against Russia. Political scientist Mairbek Vachagayev wrote about this in his telegram channel with reference to the famous analyst on conflicts, nationalism and security in the North Caucasus Harold Chambers.
Four of the five Chechen battalions are reportedly part of the APU. Sheikh Mansour’s fifth battalion remains a volunteer unit. Most of the fighters are veterans of the two Chechen wars for independence from Russia.
