The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don issued 425 convictions under Russia's "terrorism" laws in the first half of 2026, accounting for more than a third of all such rulings nationwide, according to a study by the human rights project First Department and the independent Parubets Analytics research centre.
Since the escalation of the Middle East conflict, 2,853 citizens from 75 different countries have been evacuated from Iran to Azerbaijan.
Among them are 470 Azerbaijanis, as well as 720 Chinese citizens, 323 Russians, and representatives of Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Oman, Indonesia, Iran, and other countries.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched a military operation in Iran, which Iran responded with shelling of Israel and American bases in the Middle East. On March 5, a drone attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic injured four people. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called it a "deliberate terrorist attack by Iran," after which the Azerbaijani army was put on alert. Tehran denied the attack, citing an Israeli provocation.
