In the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic, the crimes of German troops during the Great Patriotic War were recognized as genocide
The Supreme Court of Karachay-Cherkessia recognized the actions of the fascists in the region during the Great Patriotic War as genocide. The resolution states that during the occupation, crimes were committed against at least 7,500 civilians and prisoners of war.

“Colossal damage was caused to the economy and culture of the region, industrial and agricultural enterprises, cultural buildings, libraries, and archives were destroyed. The amount of damage caused, recalculated at the current exchange rate, amounted to 13.6 billion rubles,” the press service of the courts of Karachay-Cherkessia noted in a statement.

Earlier, in the North Caucasus, the courts of Stavropol and Kabardino-Balkaria recognized the actions of the Nazis as genocide. At the same time, on March 8, 1944, the Soviet government began the deportation of the Balkar people to the republics of Central Asia. 37 thousand people – mostly old people, women and children – were deported to Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Almost 40% of the migrants did not return home.

Officially, the deportation was justified by the fact that representatives of the Balkar people participated in collaborationist formations that fought on the side of Nazi Germany during World War II. The Balkars were allowed to return to their land only in 1957.
