An Azerbaijani court has remanded lawyer and human rights activist Namizad Safarov in custody for four months on fraud charges. He is accused of embezzling 53,000 manats (approximately $31,000).
The Dagestan police have clarified information about the shootout that took place in Makhachkala on May 5. Two unknown individuals attacked a traffic police unit on Kerimov Street and opened fire.
As a result, two police officers were killed and two more were injured. In addition, three civilians were injured. Among them were a 40-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl. The police managed to neutralize the attackers with return fire.
The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, noted that the shootout began after an attempt to stop the car: the driver did not comply and started shooting. A criminal case has been opened under three articles: attempt on the life of law enforcement officers, hijacking without the purpose of theft, and illegal arms trafficking.
