Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
Magomed Magomedov, deputy editor-in-chief of the Chernovik newspaper, is seeking justice in court. He filed a lawsuit against the Interior Ministry of Dagestan, demanding 150 thousand rubles in compensation for moral damage caused by illegal detention during a solitary picket in Makhachkala in January 2024.
The Sovietsky District Court of Makhachkala will hear the lawsuit on August 1. Magomedov claims that his detention violated Articles 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as Articles 29 and 31 of the Russian Constitution, which guarantee freedom of speech and assembly.
In addition to compensation, Magomedov demands an investigation into the actions of the police officers and the provocateur, whom he accuses of disrupting his protest in support of political prisoner journalist Abdulmumin Gadzhiev. After the arrest, Magomedov was not allowed to see a lawyer at the police station. The journalist was soon released.
