Human rights activists recognize Crimean Tatar as a political prisoner

The Memorial Human Rights Center recognized Eduard Asanov, a citizen of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, a Crimean Tatar, as a political prisoner. In July 2024, he was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison on charges of participating in an illegal armed group.

After more than six months of illegal detention in Grozny Police Department No. 2, 16-year-olds Said Idigov, Elbrus Saidaev, and Mansur Shabazov were released. They were kidnapped in December 2024 and held without charges, the Memorial Human Rights Center reported.

France has taken into custody 33-year-old Crimean Tatar Il'nur Shagaev, who left Crimea before Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The detention occurred while boarding a ferry to the UK based on a request from the Russian FSB, which placed Shagaev on the international wanted list on charges of having links to organizations banned in the Russian Federation.

18-year-old Said Murtazaliev from Dagestan was forcibly recruited into the army and sent to the front in Ukraine. As his mother Leyla Nakhshunova told the publication "Ponyano.Media", the young man was detained in the Moscow region in early January on suspicion of fraud. At the police station, he was offered to sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense. When he refused, they began to torture him - they put a gas mask on his head and squeezed his chest, causing him to lose consciousness.
