On August 31, 1996, in the Dagestani city of Khasavyurt, near the border with Chechnya, Russian Security Council Secretary General Alexander Lebed and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria General Aslan Maskhadov signed an agreement that brought the first Russian-Chechen war to an end. The accords were reached with the mediation of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), represented by Tim Guldimann, a Swiss diplomat and head of the OSCE Assistance Group in Chechnya.

An exhibition titled Meskhetian Turks — In the Footsteps of a Lost Exile, dedicated to the 1944 deportation of Meskhetian Turks from their ancestral homeland and their subsequent dispersal across different countries, has opened in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.

On August 14, 1992, hostilities broke out in Abkhazia; the conflict lasted over a year and became one of the most severe in Georgia's modern history. On that day, Georgian units entered the self-proclaimed Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, crossing from the direction of the Inguri River. Tbilisi justified the deployment of the National Guard by citing the need to protect railway links. However, the advancing Georgian column encountered armed resistance from Abkhaz forces.

Georgia's opposition has sharply criticized Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze after he said the August 2008 war began on August 7, when Georgian forces attacked Tskhinvali. The Coalition for Change accused the prime minister of effectively repeating the Kremlin's narrative, while the United National Movement described his remarks as "a direct betrayal of Georgia's national interests."
