Kallas: Armenia will decide on its own EU accession, Brussels has questions for Georgia

At the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas declared Armenia's right to independently determine its own path to EU membership.

"Armenia makes its own decisions; parliamentary elections are in a month," Kallas noted.

She also emphasized that the door to the European Union is open to Armenia, and the final decision rests with the country itself.

Furthermore, Kallas expressed concern about Georgia's course, despite its aspirations to join the EU. According to her, Europe is not only a geographical concept but also a set of values and principles.

"Of course, the summit taking place in Yerevan also demonstrates the importance of the Caucasus, especially now, with the war raging in Iran. We have certain questions regarding Georgia, given that the government is taking no practical steps, despite its stated desire to join the European Union. "We see that they are moving in the wrong direction. This also imposes restrictions on us, for example, in terms of funding," the European diplomat stated.

In turn, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while visiting Armenia, emphasized the common interests and challenges facing Europe. "We are in Armenia to show that Europe is one large and broad family, united by the same interests and facing the same challenges. Today, we will work on the pillars of European independence: energy, defense, and connectivity."

The European Political Community summit is taking place in Yerevan. The first Armenia-EU summit will also be held in the Armenian capital on May 4-5.
