Putin replaces Dagestan's head

Dagestan's head, Sergei Melikov, is moving to another position. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this during a meeting in the Kremlin with representatives of the republic's People's Assembly.

"The current head of the republic, Sergei Alimovich Melikov, expires in September. He has accomplished a lot, and we are grateful to him for that, but he is moving to another position. Life goes on," the Russian president said.

Putin proposed nominating Fyodor Shchukin, Chairman of the Supreme Court of the region, for the post of head of Dagestan, and Magomed Ramazanov, Deputy Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, for the post of Prime Minister.

Putin noted that Magomed Ramazanov performed well during the flood relief efforts in the republic.

"He is an active person; he is originally from Dagestan, has worked in law enforcement, and is currently working in the Far East. Overall, he has always been successful in his work," the president remarked.

As a reminder, on April 7, Putin held a video conference on the flood situation in Dagestan. He dispatched Ramazanov to the republic as deputy chairman of the government commission for flood relief.

"I would like to ask you to move to Dagestan now and work there as deputy plenipotentiary representative in your native land. Your knowledge of the situation, your understanding of what's happening, and your ability to directly communicate with people will, in my opinion, be in demand," Putin told Ramazanov at the meeting.

Following Ramazanov's visit to Dagestan, many again began talking about the resignation of the now unpopular Sergei Melikov.

Ramazanov graduated from the FSB Academy and served in Directorate K (counterintelligence for the credit and financial system and banking sector).

The new head of Dagestan, Fyodor Shchukin, was born in 1976. He began his career in the judicial system in 2004 in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. In February 2024, he was appointed Chairman of the Supreme Court of Dagestan.

Sergey Melikov has led Dagestan since 2021. In early April, he already addressed rumors of his possible resignation following the devastating flooding in the republic. He emphasized his loyalty to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, declaring his readiness to serve wherever designated. The flooding, caused by heavy rains on March 28 and April 4-5, affected approximately 15,500 people, left nearly 20 districts without power, and claimed the lives of six people, including children.
