Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Moscow views events concerning Armenia as a manifestation of an attempt to undermine integration structures involving Russia.
"Based on Armenia's political and foreign economic vacillations, we see persistent attempts by proponents of a rules-based order to attack integration associations in which our country directly participates. At the same time, they are instilling illusory notions that the history and geography of peoples who have lived side by side for centuries and always helped each other can be revised," Ushakov said at the Primakov Readings forum.
He added that the situation surrounding Ukraine demonstrates "the tragedy to which all this could lead."
Previously, the Russian side has repeatedly stated the unacceptability of simultaneous membership in the EAEU and the EU, given Yerevan's desire to integrate with the EU. In January 2026, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reaffirmed the country's desire to become a full member of the European Union.
At the EAEU summit held on May 29 in Astana, the heads of state of the union issued a joint statement. It, in particular, emphasized the need for an expeditious referendum in Armenia on joining the EU or maintaining membership in the EAEU.
