On August 14, 1992, hostilities broke out in Abkhazia; the conflict lasted over a year and became one of the most severe in Georgia's modern history. On that day, Georgian units entered the self-proclaimed Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, crossing from the direction of the Inguri River. Tbilisi justified the deployment of the National Guard by citing the need to protect railway links. However, the advancing Georgian column encountered armed resistance from Abkhaz forces.

Georgia's opposition has sharply criticized Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze after he said the August 2008 war began on August 7, when Georgian forces attacked Tskhinvali. The Coalition for Change accused the prime minister of effectively repeating the Kremlin's narrative, while the United National Movement described his remarks as "a direct betrayal of Georgia's national interests."

The previous evening in Nalchik, at the "Tree of Life" memorial, participants lit 101 candles—a symbolic number referring to the years of the Caucasian War.

On December 31, 1994, on New Year's Eve, Russian troops launched an assault on Grozny. As part of the so-called "operation to restore constitutional order," the Russian command hoped to quickly capture the city, but they encountered a resounding failure. A petition addressed to the President of Russia has been published on Change.Org, asking for the restoration of the Aukh District in Dagestan, which was abolished in 1944 following the deportation of the Chechen population.

Today, Azerbaijan celebrates National Revival Day. This day has historical ties to the national liberation movement that erupted in Baku in November-December 1988.

On November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day, a symbol of national independence and the country's historical heritage. The tricolor flag, first adopted on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, was abolished during the Soviet era, but regained its status after the restoration of independence in 1991.

Today marks 33 years since the start of the bloodiest war in Georgia's modern history. Commemorative events are taking place across the country. In the morning, veterans, family members of the victims and activists gathered at the Heroes' Memorial in the center of the capital. The memory of the victims of the conflict was honored by members of the Abkhaz government and the Supreme Council in exile, Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia Grigol Giorgadze and Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces, Chief of the General Staff Major General Johnny Tatunashvili.

Every year on May 28, Azerbaijan officially celebrates the Republic Day. Since October 15, 2021, this date is called "Independence Day".
