Today, Azerbaijan celebrates National Revival Day. This day has historical ties to the national liberation movement that erupted in Baku in November-December 1988.

On November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day, a symbol of national independence and the country's historical heritage. The tricolor flag, first adopted on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, was abolished during the Soviet era, but regained its status after the restoration of independence in 1991.

Today marks 33 years since the start of the bloodiest war in Georgia's modern history. Commemorative events are taking place across the country. On April 21, 1996, the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev, was killed by a Russian rocket on the outskirts of the village of Gekhi-Chu in the Urus-Martanovsky district.

The Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria recognized the "crimes of the German fascist invaders committed on the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous SSR during the Great Patriotic War as genocide of the Soviet people." The Investigative Committee of the republic reported that during the occupation, more than four thousand civilians and prisoners of war were killed, and also died of hunger and disease.

On April 21, 1996, on the outskirts of the village of Gekhi-Chu, Urus-Martan District, the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev, was killed by a Russian missile.

On April 7–8, 1995, during the first Russian-Chechen war, Russian troops, carrying out a cleansing operation in the village of Samashki, Achkhoy-Martan region, killed, according to various estimates, at least one hundred civilians.
