Today marks 33 years since the start of the bloodiest war in Georgia's modern history. Commemorative events are taking place across the country. In the morning, veterans, family members of the victims and activists gathered at the Heroes' Memorial in the center of the capital. The memory of the victims of the conflict was honored by members of the Abkhaz government and the Supreme Council in exile, Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia Grigol Giorgadze and Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces, Chief of the General Staff Major General Johnny Tatunashvili.

On April 21, 1996, the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev, was killed by a Russian rocket on the outskirts of the village of Gekhi-Chu in the Urus-Martanovsky district.

The Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria recognized the "crimes of the German fascist invaders committed on the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous SSR during the Great Patriotic War as genocide of the Soviet people." The Investigative Committee of the republic reported that during the occupation, more than four thousand civilians and prisoners of war were killed, and also died of hunger and disease.

On April 21, 1996, on the outskirts of the village of Gekhi-Chu, Urus-Martan District, the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev, was killed by a Russian missile.

On April 7–8, 1995, during the first Russian-Chechen war, Russian troops, carrying out a cleansing operation in the village of Samashki, Achkhoy-Martan region, killed, according to various estimates, at least one hundred civilians.
